There are many reasons why businesses should care about becoming sustainable and interact within planetary boundaries. But what do they care for in connection to sustainability?

And what should you pay attention to because these generations are looking for different things than previous generations.

Here our top 3 Millennials & Generation Z focus areas for sustainability in business:

1. Younger generations place greater value in climate control

First of all, younger generations place value on climate control and the environment as an essential part of their lives. These generations look at their careers in a more holistic way, and money is not the only driver for them. 2. Younger generations want to enact social change

Secondly, since Millennials and Generation Z have greater access to technology, their drive to enact social change is also bigger. From a young age, these generations have had access to information from all over the world regarding social and environmental issues. Therefore, they have a much more activist spirit than previous generations did. These generations want to work for companies that share their values. They want to work for companies that really make a difference (Turner, 2015).

3. The pandemic caused an increase in younger generations’ sense of individual responsibility

Some things have not changed due to the pandemic: when asked for their primary concerns, both Millennials and Generation Z still placed climate change as their biggest concern. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also caused change within these generations. For these generations, the pandemic has reinforced their desire to hero drive positive change in their communities. The pandemic has made these generations even more sympathetic towards the needs of others and has highlighted new issues for them. It has increased these generations’ sense of individual responsibility and has inspired them to take actions that have a positive influence on their community (Deloitte, 2020).
